Date:2019-04-11 Hits:1429

"Airbus subsidies from the European Union have had a negative impact on the United States."

On April 9, US President Trump tweeted that the US would impose tariffs on 11 billion US dollars worth of EU products.

"The World Trade Organization believes that EU subsidies to Airbus have a negative impact on the United States," he wrote on Twitter. Now, the United States will impose tariffs on 11 billion dollars worth of EU products! For years, the European Union has been taking advantage of the United States in trade. This situation will stop soon!"

According to Reuters on the 9th, every year the United States suffers as much as $11 billion in losses from EU subsidies. The World Trade Organization also said that the EU subsidies to Airbus had a "negative impact" on the United States.

Reported that for more than a decade, the European Union and the United States have been arguing about subsidizing their respective airlines. Both sides have provided billions of dollars to their respective airlines to gain an edge in the global aircraft industry.

The U.S. Trade Representative Office (USTR) said on April 8 that Trump's government would impose tariffs on 11 billion dollars worth of European Union products in response to "economic damage to the United States caused by EU subsidies to Airbus". USTR also proposed a list of products that would impose tariffs on the EU, including large commercial aircraft and spare parts, dairy products, wine and so on.

Robert Lighthizer, the U.S. trade representative, said in a statement, "Our ultimate goal is to reach a trade agreement with the European Union to end all subsidies for civil aircraft that do not meet WTO requirements. When the EU terminates these non-conforming subsidies, the U.S. response will be lifted accordingly.

The EU responded on the 9th. Russia Today reports that the EU is preparing to retaliate against the U.S. decision. An EU Executive Committee source said the proposed US countermeasure was "too exaggerated". Only WTO arbitrators can decide the amount of tariffs imposed on EU goods.

In response to the statement made by the Office of the United States Trade Representative, Airbus responded on the 9th that there was no legal basis for Washington's move, which would only deepen transatlantic trade tensions. Boeing said in a statement that it "supports the continuous efforts of the U.S. Trade Representative and his team to maintain a balanced competitive environment in the global aircraft market."
